My name is Greg Clark and I grew up in St. John’s part of North Portland. I have ever met you ever, but saw you fight as a kid. Now I get to see you on Youtube.com. I forgot how much of a good show you guys put on for us. But I have to say, even my dear sweet grandmother loved you!! I used to goto Hazel Dell pretty much every weekend and my grandparents loved Portland Wrestling. She is gone now, dead about 4 yrs ago at age 88. She was a tough lady from Oklahoma. I just wanted to thank you for all the good times you gave us in Portland and in my family. And please………….no turnbuckle treatment!!! Its sad that Stan Stasiak passed, he was a great one, too. But anyways, I am 38 yrs old and in Texas. My wife and I are moving back to Portland in 6 months or so. We hope to see Buddy Rose’s school in Portland. You guys were always so funny. It’s a shame that pro wrestling just isn’t as funny as it used to be. Oh yea, what are you doing these days? Not selling used cars are you? J Hello Greg,,, Thankyou for the nice note and I am sorry to hear about you Grandmother's passing ,she is t rest now awaiting the second coming of our Lord and Savoir Jesus Christ. Stan 's gone too he was a friend of mine. It seems our era is losing men and women rather rapidly these days. During our day there were no "wrestling schools", you got a try out and IF your showed some promise you would get a preliminary match with one of the older guys who would stretch you to see how much pain you could stand.
If you will look on my site, "dutchsavage.com", you will see what I am doing these days ,,,,look for the "Lord's loud Cry"html under the opening picture and it will take you to links of our ministry,,, yes,,, that's right I am an ordained pastor. You may enjoy some of the half hour shows,,, let me know if you do.... again thankyou for the nice note and God's peace Dutch
Oh the memories! As I had children of my own down in Arizona and they were watching wresting on TV in the 80's I kept telling them that I saw most of those guys from five feet away....nobody ever believed me. I was there every weekend from 68-early 71 when I got drafted and what you guys did was nothing short of perfect. Every single night.
And I still think you had something in that kneepad of yours.
What can an old fan say but thank you. I also think you guys were better wrestlers than what we see today. Two out of three falls....good grief. I saw you work a guys leg over for an hour once. Not some 10 minute match to fit on a TV commercial.
What I would give to be sitting outside the Crow's Nest one more time.
And as Frank would have said...."well, there you go"
Thanks Dutch.

One Saturday afternoon she was flipping through the channels, and came across a familiar face. The man she so intently watched was a mountain of a man with long, dark sideburns and he talked about what he was going to do to his next opponent when he got him in the ring. He was none other than Stan "The Man"Stasiak. What my had discovered was Big Time Pro Wrestling. Both of my parents were huge wrestling fans. They told me many stories and mentioned quite a few names, with the likes of Johnny Valentine, Haystacks Calhoun, Stan Stasiak, Larry "The Ax" Henning, Tony Borne as well as who my mom had dubbed "the most handsome man in wrestling " Dutch Savage. I was hooked from that moment on. We spent many Saturdays watching wrestling on TV. and what a treat it was when wrestling put on their events at Riverview High School, in Finley Washington. I remember seeing all the big names such as Billy Jack Haynes, Roddy Piper , a very young Curt Henning, Brady Boone, The Assassin, Rip "The Crippler' Oliver , "Mean" Mike Miller , Bobby Jaggers , Hack Sawyer , "Dizzy" Hogan, Rocky Johnson, Tom Zenk, on occasion Andre "The Giant", Jimmy Snuka, Stan Stasiak, Dr.D.Dave Schultz, Matt Borne, and who could forget one of my all time favorites The Dynamite Kid. Those were the days!!!! I would give anything to be 9 years old again and relive that part of my life. I remember shaking you're hand on time and getting you're autograph. I was very scared to approach as I was always small as a little boy. You're autograph was the very first I had ever received. I just wanted to than you for all the memories I have of professional wrestling. I am still a fan today and have even gotten my wife hooked. Although it is not as exciting as it was back in 1981, anytime someone mentions professional wrestling, the first name that always comes to mind, is Dutch Savage. Sincerely , Patrick Sheets Dutch, this is CoachDuff. I am the new cornerbacks coach at the University of Hawaii. I grew up in Seattle and you were my hero! My dad used to take me to the Seattle Arena to watch you. I saw two coal miner's glove matches down there. Interestingly enough, I played college ball then spent 8 years in the Marine Corps in the elite 2 Force Recon Company. In Somalia, I met a SEAL from Portland who had met Jesse Ventura and we would sit up in our tent and laugh and reminesce about The Flying Dutchman, Frank Bonema, Sandy Barr, and the crew. You sure touched alot of lives Dutch! As a young boy, I once approached Bull Ramos for an autograph and he not only signed it on a ripped up piece of popcorn cup, he asked me to sit down with him an watched the matches with me. I was probably 7 or 8 and am 38 now. He was trully a gentle, kind man. Anyways, I want to thank you for the fun you gave me as a young boy. I lived on the bottom of Queen Anne by the Fremont bridge and you were the hero of the whole neighborhood. I am now a college football coach and have three kids and don't watch wrestling any more, nor do I let my kids watch it. They don't need soft porn in the house. Is there any way I can get a large poster or picture of you autographed? I'll pay whatever the cost. I would like to frame a huge picture of you and put on the wall. When people ask me who it is, I'll tell them that's Dutch Savage, my childhood hero! I get back to Seattle every spring to do some flyfishing for steelhead, my lifelong passion. Maybe you can jump in the jetsled one spring and we'll catch a few. If not, I hope you are happy, healthy and your family the same. Semper Fi Coach Duff
PS "Goodnight Kate!"
Dutch, I am so very sorry to hear one of the Greatest Guys in my younger years is no longer with us, God Bless both Luke and You! I had missed him for years after he moved away but never forgot the one wrestler that took time for me and always when I was at the store asked me how I was doing and gave me a giant hug! Like I said I am 53 now and it hurts but, I know he is blessed by the hand of God! In a way, when my time comes, I know Luke and I will know each other and be close once again! At work today some of the young guys were talking about pro wrestling and its "stars" A co worker and I quickly pointed out that the real stars were from when we were kids back in the late 60s and 70s. Dutch {the THUMB} Savage, Bulldog Bob Brown {spit all over Ron Morrier during an interview} Gene { Canadas greatest Athelete} Kiniski to name a few were real stars. Im sorry Dutch not interested in watching todays wrestling too many good memories of your matches that this new stuff cant touch. Thank you Dutch PS wasnt there a referree in Seattle named Pango Pango who used to get involved? |
Hello Nick from Vancouver B.C. Canada,,, nice to hear from you and thank you for the accolades, but the guys I worked with deserve all the credit,,, all I did was show up.Your are correct in your assumptions about the 60's and the 70's,,, these newer "rasselers" don't know a hammer lock from a Yale Lock. They are nothing but pitiful tumblers and bump artists. Their licenses say "professional entertainers" because that's all they are....period. Had we national TV when we were in the business, there would have been riots in all the major cities, with the fans trying to kill the bad guys.Nes-pa'.Pango Pango was a jobber, later turned Ref for harry Elliot when he was promoting,,, I never met him, he was before my time , if we are talking about the same guy. In any event thanks form the note and Peace Dutch
| Question: From Paul
Hi Dutch: |
Hello Paul from Portland,, well I have answered your question a number of times on the site. I personally wanted to go back to being a heel, cause I loved the riots I could cause in those days.... but.... the fans would have none of it. no matter what I did , low blows, eye gouging, hair pulling kicking stomping,,, they cheered me on. The hells I was working with would do the exact same thing and the fans would Boo them out of the arenas,,,, remember Paul. Nuff said ,,, thanks for the note Paul,,, peace Dutch
Question: From Alex Bulldog Bob Brown could draw a lot of heat. What kind of a Fella was he?
Alex from Ontario,,, dear heart, Bob Brown learned how to get heat at the foot of this old man. He was jobber in K.C. in the old Bob Giegle territory, where he used to jobs for me and others. When he came to Vancouver B. C., I took him under my wing and he became my Tag partner. To say he could get a lot of heat was an understatement,,, he learned from the masters like John Tolos, Kinji Shybuia, Dean Higuchi, Don Leo Jonathan , Kiniski Geigle,,and myself.....yes,, he could get a lot of heat,,,, but Bob,,,, never did thank any of us, he was kind of selfish that way,,, he though it was all his doing,,,, he worked with some of the greatest workers in the business that made him look like superduck,,,, peace Dutch
Question: Dutch, thank you for some wonderful memories battling Bull Ramos and the Royal Kangaroos. I had the pleasure of serving you and your lovely wife on a couple of occasions at Sears Catalog at the Vancouver Mall, gosh...about 25 years ago. Anyway, given the recent climate in professional sports, and the use of steroids, did you have any suspicions that other wrestlers used that garbage? Looking at those great pictures on this site, everyone looks pretty natural. I'm also wondering if drug testing was ever done while you were active in the sport. Thank you for witnessing for the Lord. The time on this earth is short. Blessings. John M
Hello John M,, and Thank you for the most welcome note. One always loves to hear something positive from folks in this rotten old world,,, such as yourself. Thank you for the kudos but all glory goes to the Lord Jesus and not me . He gave me the ability and at the time I never knew it. I know who is my Strength ,,now though. Amen. The Sears catalog center. I met my wife there 26 years ago in August this year. Sorry I don't remember you, but more than likely, if I saw you I would remember. Steroids,,, the business is full of them today. I dare say there is not one man or woman in the business today that is not FULL of them. There is no drug testing such as there was during my tenure in the business. Nowadays they get entertainment licenses from the state and not wrestling licenses. Every thing has changed for the worse. "They shall call evil good and good evil",,, remember?? During my day if you even mentioned the word steroid in the dressing room you were black balled by the promoter and the boys,,, not so today anything goes ,the business is nothing more than a cheap burlesque these days. A sick joke,,,, and the joke is on the paying public,,,, but "they love to have it so".Have a great week John it was nice to hear from you,,, granpa Dutch
Question: Wondering what ever happened to your old buddy Earl Maynard. You two really had some major scraps as I recall. Thanks!
Hello Ray,,, Earl Maynard and I never had any real big scraps. I worked with him in British Columbia a few times and once or twice in LA, but other than that there wasn't any real programs. He was a real nice guy and decent worker,, but,, that's all I remember of him. If I were to say," yes I remember the matches with him", that would make me a liar and I will not do that,,, sorry, I can't be of any help in remembering,,, when you get to be 70 ,,I will wager your mind loses things, places and people also,,, have a great week ,, Peace ,, Dutch
Question: Hi Dutch: I really enjoy your site and the questions that you answer for all the fans. I have asked a couple in the past and you gave very good answers.I have a three questions for you.1) What is your opinion of Bret Hart as a wrestler? Do you think he was one of the best technical wrestlers of all time or a bit over-rated? 2) Did you see his documentary "Wrestling With Shadows" ----if so, what are your thoughts on it. Do you feel that Vince McMahon stabbed Bret in the back or is there more to it? 3) Have you been able to lead any past wrestlers of your era to Christ and if so who? Thanks and take care.
Hi Gregg, Nice to hear from you, I really have no opinion on Gregg Hart, he was long after my time. However if he came out of his father's stable , he had to know how to work. Never watched him,,, sorry. No I don't think he is/was ever the best technical wrestler,,,none of these " new generational" wrestler had the ring savvy that most of out top people had.....all these newer guys are nothing but acrobats,,, I haven't seen any of them that could start a riot with a hammer lock.I try to never say anything detrimental about anyone, when you point your finger at someone ,,, take a look at your hand ,,, there are 3 fingers pointing back at you. MCMann has his agenda,,, it's not mine , I have no comment. No, none of the boys wanted to have anything to do with Christ,,,,except when they were in deep trouble,,, if you know what I mean,,,, Thanks Gregg Dutch
Question: Hey Dutch...how are ya, and what are you up to these days..used to watch you in Seattle at Seattle Center Arena..Very much enjoyed you and all the wrestlers there...My question is this,,Are you and Playboy Buddy Rose not the best of friends? I'm not talking about in the ring...just wondered about relationship outside of the ring...Thank you and best of luck to you, David
Hello David,,, why would you ask me such a question and what is the motive behind it???,,, where did you hear we were not friends and, why such a personal question??? Wouldn't you admit that hearing this from a fan after 25 years in retirement would arouse your curiosity. I try not to judge people these day and I wish Rose nothing but the best,,,,and,,, as far as getting into a gossip and guile scenario,,, I run to the nearest exit...."In the last days, they shall make a man an offender for a word". Book of Isaiah,,, have a nice week,,, but pleas shop for inuendo's and skuttlebutt elsewhere.,,, Peace Dutch
Question: No question...just remembering my past. I used to watch you and Lonnie Maine, "Bull" Ramos, and all the others come to the National Guard Armory in Coos Bay in the 70s. Those were good days! You provided not only myself, but my family with great entertainment. I wish you the very best.
Thanks Danny, my oldest son's name is Danny. Yes, Mayne and Ramos were a couple of the greatest, especially Ramos. We also thank you for the kind remarks. Were you at the Armory the night I threw Jonathan Boyd out the side upstairs door and didn't know it way only a small fire escape landing and Boyd was hanging onto the railing 3 stories up. they had to go out and rescue hi. your right those were the days...Are you in the service over there or at work or do you live there. Hope your doing well and enjoying life. Glad you like the site... peace Dutch
Question: Hi Dutch, Just found your site. Looks good. It makes me happy to see the legends of old school wrestlers living on. I am the son of Man Mountain Mike. I recently acquired a video of a slew of silent 8mm footage filmed at the Olympic in LA. Lots of matches with my dad (who passed away in 1988). I was wondering if you ever wrestled with him, or have any insight on this, unknown to me, era of his life. I was also wondering, as this video I have is silent, were any of the matches televised with sound and commentary, or is all the surviving footage silent, like this? I would love to hear the match...the sound of the ring...ect. ect. Hope to hear from you, and hope all is well.
Hello Mike, I Your Dad worked for Don Owen and Myself in the old Portland, Seattle Territory at one time. I personally don't remember ever working with him. He had copied my brothers gimmick of Man Mountain Campbell from the 60's,, who was later know as Big Luke Brown of the old Kentuckians tag team., which was Tiny Smith and Luke. I don't have any footage of him either,,,sorry. I am sure that one of the other sites on the net must carry some film on him,,,check around. Your Dad was a pretty good hand , but didn't last long here, he had the dubious luck to come in just after Haystacks Calhoun was here and he was a hard act to follow at that time. I liked Mike's working ability much more than I did Calhoun, Calhoun ,,,once you see him the first time , the second time was too much, Nes-pa'. Peace Dutch Sorry I can't be of more help.
Question: Hi Dutch; Love your web site. You've answered some of my questions in the past, But these may stump ya.1) Why is Rip Oliver such an obscure enigma in the wrestling world? I think he was one of the best heels I ever saw. The man could sell a match like a real genius. He made Billy Jack look like freakin' superman, and could have a great match with just about anybody. His name is all over the internet, but that's about it; his name and some match results, and little else. Why do you think such a great worker remained so obscure? 2) Can you tell me more about him? His home town, other gimmicks he used, date of his professional debut, who trained him, et?
| Hello again Bob,,, let's try some common sense in approaching your thoughts about the Ripper. I know he is your favorite and when I say what I am going to say,,,, try and understand the remarks through a Christian's eyes... You asked me a question, I will give you a true answer as much as is in me. Rip was a good heel here because we made him look like a good heel. He learned from us to make a match perfect,, he had to make his opponent look like superduck. When he first came in he was not on top allover the country, he was a good heel but not a top one. Mind you, he was always a gentleman to me, that's why I worked him into top spots. He has chosen to step out of the limelight for reasons of his own and who are we to question his very personal reasons,,,, make sense? If your the Ripper it does and I never question a man's motives ,, they are his and his alone. He made everyone look great he worked with,,, now,,,Iwonder where he got that work ethic from???
I don't know too much about him from the other territories , but he came to us as an obscure heel that could work,,, he later became an expert in phys. I understand Rip is in Louisiana or some other southern state at present, he has a very bad heart condition,,, I have no other info on him and he was my pupil,,, talk about mystifying,,, I can't figure him either. I never hear from him....end of story,,, Peace Dutch |
Question: Great shots of you in action man! Wow... a real turn on to see you in action. What are you doing these days and where are you located?Ron in Tampa. Fla.
Well Hello Ron, form Florida , the land of snakes , giant roaches, mosqitetos, hurricanes and sometimes legal elections, only when the Bushes aren't running.. I am retired , living up in SW Washington State, across the Columbia River from Portland, just under Mt. St. Helen, about 8 miles out of the redzone. We watch her burp once in a while, she is just out the north sidewindows, and she drives the very dumb scientists who crawl around on hercrazy. She's an active volcano you see.Nice to hear from fans from time to time , I am looking for a newwebmaster, I don't care where he or she is located, just so they know how to handle a site. There is no pay involved, but they could make some monies. Know of anyone who might be interested,,, e-mail me ,,, thanks for the note,,, Grandpa Dutch
Question: Dear Dutch My dad and I used to watch you wrestle and really enjoyed your style. Is there anywhere that I could get get more pictures of you wrestling or a tape of your matches. Thanks jp.
Boy Joeff, I have no idea where they keep tapes of me in the ring,,, or who has them,,most of the ones that I have seen were at the end of my career,,,and I was 47 when the were taped,,, the others were on the old black and white versions and I have no idea where to get them. The TV stations never kept copies,, maybe someone on the other site have some I am at a loss.I am glad you liked my wrestling , but humbly give the Lord Himself for any ability I had during those years, He was guiding my life and I didn't know it, then,,, but I know it now,,, thanks for the note,,,,,God's peace Dutch
Question: Where is Rip the crippler oliver now, What is he doing and do you keep in touch with him or Billy Jack Haynes?
Hi Kevin,,, I have no idea where Ripper is , someone said he went back to Alabama, or some where down south. You know none of the guys I broke into the business has ever called me with the exception of Bull Ramos. Appriciative bunch aren't they. The only guys I keep in touch with now are Sandy Barr and the Bull,,, every now and them Don Leo Jonathan. Peace Dutch ps do you know anyone that would like to handle my web site,,, my guy went back to school full time for his masters. It doesn't cost anything to do it,,, it 's already set up.
Question: Do you remember the Masked Executioner when you were in Hawaii? I heard his real name was Vic Christy. What can you tell us about him? I can't find any information or photographs of Vic Christy's version of The Masked Executioner. I heard about Vic Christy wrestling in the 1930s and 40s so I guess he must have been quite old in the 1960s. WM in Honolulu, Hawaii
"Hello WM from Hawaii,,, howsit brudda, I did not know Vic Christy, but probably fo sure this "howlee" was good worker, else da bugga not work for Ed Francis and Tally Blears. I had heard that he was a fair hand but outside of Minneapolis and some mid-west territories, he didn't enjoy much success. Maybe some one else could enlighten us. Hey Brudda, I may be old but me remembering anything from the 40's, 50's , hey , give dis ole man a break,,,,cheeezzzz. Sorry I can't be of more help,, aloha Dutch "
Question: Mr. Savage, Amazing site, amazing memories. Thank you for taking the time to set this up and answer so many questions. More importantly, it's great to see you are a follower of Jesus. In the mid-70s, my older brother befriended several of the wrestlers in the Vancouver area. One night, the Morrow brothers (Eddie and Gerry) came to our house for dinner. I was a kid (probably 6 or 7 yrs old at the time), and remember being wildly afraid of these two guys. They tried to befriend me, but to no avail. Their foreheads looked like a road map, which to a kid adds to the terror (or it did for me)! I remember Eddie answering my question (asked from far away) by saying "I get hurt every time I wessel. De mat hurts, lil guy". Did you ever have a chance to work with the Morrow brothers, Eddie and Gerry? If so, what are your memories of them? Blessings in Christ, Jeff Alexander in Halifax, N.S. (via Vancouver)
"Hello Jeff from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada,,, Thanks for the note. I knew Eddie Morrow but I didn't know his brother. Yes I worked wit Eddie he was a fair hand but neither he nor his brother had what it took in those days to make it rely big. They weren't the best on the mike and their interviews were less than convincing,,,but,,, they were both hard workers and had their place in the scheme of things during that era. I liked Eddie, he was honest and a straight shooter with everyone. Eddie wasn't in the old Vancouver territory very long and I have no idea where they are today,,, but I do thank you for remembering them and jogging my memory a bit,,, peace Dutch"
Question: Hello, Dutch. Its always nice to have a chance to correspond with you. I have tremendous respect and admiration for you. You are a true gentleman and I will always be a fan of "The Dutchman." I have been wondering if you know how Sandy Barr is doing these days? He has had many challenges with losing members of his family and such. I have also lost a husband and a brother in the last few years so I know how hard that can be. Thank you for your time you are a true gentleman. Cindy S. in Monroe, WA.
"Hello again Cindy, from Monroe, Washington. My condolences on the loss of your family members. I certainly hope they were in Christ, if they were you will see them at the last trump, when the dead in Christ rise to meet him in the air. My heart goes put to you who remain. Sandy Barr is still in Portland and he still has a small flea market and it,, still ,,,takes him 20 minutes to answer a 5 word question, bless his heat. He and I have been friends for over 40 years now, Great guy. Wish you all the best and thank you for the kind words and note,,,, Peace Dutch"
Question: THANKS FOR YOUR ANSWER OF A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO....I KEEP FINDING MYSELF RETURNING TO YOUR SITE EVERY OTHER DAY ....GUESS I'M RETURNING TO RECALL MY YOUTH....ANYWAY 2 PEOPLE POP INTO MY MINE I WAS WONDERING ABOUT....FIRST SHAG THOMAS ..WHAT KIND OF GUY WAS HE AWAY FROM THE RING AND HOW OLD WAS HE WHEN HE RETIRED...IT SEEMS HE WAS AROUND FOR ALONG TIME....ALSO I REALLY ENJOYED THE ANTICS OF " RING SIDE ROSIE ", WAS SHE JUST A FAN OR DID SHE WORK FOR THE OWEN'S....THANKS FOR CHATTING WITH YOUR MANY FANS INCLUDING MYSELF....IT REALLY HELPS SOME DAYS GO BY WITH A TWINKLE IN MY EYE....PEACE AND PRAYERS FROM SUNNY AND "WARM" ARIZONA.... Randy in Yuma, AZ.
"Hello Again Randy from sunny and warm Arizona,,,,we hate you up here in rainy, green and cool Washington state,,,Ha. Shag as I remember, was about 50 when he finally retired. He was a real class act and one very nice human being. Left a very nice family behind and he is sure missed by his wife Shirley. Not to many people realize this about Shag but he was one of the first black all-American football players out of Ohio State. Graduated with academic honors too. He had quite a business mind owned not a few businesses during his tenure with us. Most of all he was afriend of mine and loved to go fishing off my boat houses at lake Vancouver's Felida, Moorage here. Ringside Rosie never missed a Saturday or Tuesday night match in Portland for over 20 years,,,she is gone now. No she wasn't a plant, she was the real McCoy. Thanks Dutch"
Question: Hi Dutch! You were so kind in answering my question about Guy Mitchell several weeks ago that I wanted to ask you some more. I seem to remember a British wrestler by the name of Wayne Bridges who wrestled in Vancouver in the mid-late 70's. I believe he was feuding with The Brute when I saw him on TV while I was staying with my grandparents in Ontario. Can you tell me anything about him? Also, I saw a wrestler named Dan Kroffet wrestle in Calgary once. Do you remember him wrestling in Vancouver? Thanks again for your time Dutch. I hope you don't mind us writing to you more than once. Mark Christie in Tampa, FL.
"Hello again Mark Christe from Tampa, Fla., I guess people like to see their name up in lights on the internet, that' s why I always answer in the same way the inquiries we get on the site. I never knew Wayne Bridges, he was a Tomko product and most of his "products' never went anywhere, most all ended up either quitting or getting lost in the shuffle when the NW territory got pushed out by a really smart promoter by the name of Vince McMann Jr. That really separated the "wheat from the tares". The cream always rises to the top. No matter what folks say or think, fact is fact. Never heard of Dan Krofett,,, he was also Probably' one of Stu Harts jobbers. Thanks Dutch"
Question: Give me your thoughts on your favorite arenas. In particular, wrestling in Chicago. Al Fujara in Chicago, IL.
"Hey Al, Con bow wah,,, Chi fans were absolutory fabulous to work in front of, but you had to be careful not to get too much heat if you didn't want a riot. They were great and took real good care of their favorites, what with special unasked for gifts, but much appreciated by those of us that were fortunate enough to be in and amongst the. I loved Chicago in the summer,,,, but the winter,,, bbbbbrrrrrrrr,,,, too cold. Takes a special breed of American to live there,,,, Go Bears,,,, I have been a Bear fan since before you were born,,,,, DA BEARS ,,,, peace Dutch"
Question: Could you give a run down on what your daily routine was as a full time wrestler? Where you stayed, how often you traveled, how many days a week you wrestled, what you did for fun etc? Alex in London, Ontario
| "Hello Alex from London, Ontario,,, What a question,,,space doesn't provide a very long answer so I will make this the short version. I do thank you for asking though. First of all I can only tell you what most of my days were like when I was one of the "boys",,,, before I became a promoter. Let me just give you one week from the pacific north west Portland, Seattle, Vancouver , territory.
Monday morning I went to the Portland PDX, jumped on an 11:00 am flight to Vancouver , B.C. territory, arrived at noon, went to a motel, took a nap, ate an early dinner about 3:00, rested went to the Pain Gardens by cab at 6:30 pm. Usually I was in every main event no matter where I went so I had to wait till about 10:00 that night to go into the ring. Did my match, went back to the motel,,, Tuesday morning I went Back to Portland, made the house show that evening , the main event, went home after wards, Wednesday morning I was either on my way to Medford, Oregon, or to San Francisco to do the TV for the Cow Palace and the House show that night, then back to Portland, then Thursday morning I made radio show for the Salem house show that evening or every other week I was booked in the Olympic in L.A. After the Salem show we would do TV at 11:30 pm then go back to Portland. Friday morning I would go to Eugene, Oregon and make radio interviews for the Eugene Cow Palace that night, back to Portland and Saturday evening the Portland Television show,,, then I would start the grind again on Monday morning,,, back to B.C.,,,,now mind you in between these shots we would alter towns, like Klamath Falls, Pendleton, the Dalles, Ashland, or,,Tronto, Winnepeg,Canada, or Sacramento, Ca., or Spokane, Wa., , Bend, Prineville. Oregon , or to Victoria, B.C. to Toronto, Winnepeg, and the list goes on and on. That was pretty much ,,,,,my schedule,,, can't speak for some of the other boys.....FUN,,,,when did I have time for that? I was on the road 7 nights a week and some 365 days a years, many times on the road for special Christmas, Thanksgiving, my birthday, my children's birthdays and so on,,,,,,and when I became an owner/promoter the trips got even worse. I didn't have time for family, just work and lots of pain,,, when you were one of the "boys", you had to maintain your own insurance, work hurt and very exhausted most of the time and smile a lot for the fans. They never really saw what we did behind the scenes to make show as good as they were in our era,,,, thanks Alex,,, peace Dutch" |
Question: Hey Dutch, Glad to see that you are still going and still have a love for wrestling. I too remember Saturday night's with Portland Wrestling and all the visits you and the other wrestlers made to Medford. I used to beg my mom to be able to stay up late to watch you guys in action. I never missed a night for more than 15 years. It was GREAT! You and the others from the Portland era are the reason that I still have the love for wrestling. I happend to stumble across Playboy Buddy Rose's webpage today. Do you still keep in touch with him? Some great rivalries there. One more question. I remember a certain match, the Coal Miner's match, in which a certain coal miner's glove (with metal bars attached) was placed on one ring post and the first man to get it was able to use it to their advantage. I do believe it was you who first introduced this match. Anyways, if it was you, do you still have the glove? Well, thanks for the great memories. You and the others set the bar really high and, in my opinion, today's wrestlers have yet to achieve that level. Steve Vega in Beaufort, SC (Originally Medford, OR)
"Hello Steve from Beaufort South, Carolina ,,,, How ya-all doin?? What a great note, Much appreciated , makes an old man very humble. Yes the Medford armory brings back some classic sellout and memories to say the least/ Yes, the West Virginia Coal Miners Match was my invention,,,, which was later ruined by some of the people in the business that didn't know how to promote it. They ran it into the ground and I know who was responsible for it.....but that's OK ,,,we did it correctly and it drew no matter where we took it. We thank you most humbly for being a fan all these years and hope you stay one. As far as Buddy goes, I have contacted his web site to talk to him and even written him, but no answer,,, maybe the letter isn't getting through his web master ,, I don't know. He is in Portland and he and Wiskowski have a wrestling "school" over there. Again thanks for the nice note,,,, Regards Dutch"
Question: Hello, Dutch. I grew up in the Medford area in the 1970s and was a huge fan ("mark"). My father had worked in the So. Cal. promotion in the mid-1950s. (He was mostly a prelim jobber whose job it was to enhance the fearsome reputation of heels by getting his butt kicked. I recall him telling me about Blassie just kicking the hell out of him one Saturday night, I think at the L.A. Sports Arena.) Anyway, we used to go to the matches at the Medford Armory on Wednesday nights, and then we'd watch the Saturday night matches from Portland with Frank Bonema as host. Dad would always point out how moves were made, and he was really good at predicting the outcomes of works that were designed to extend a feud into the next week. He thought one of the best ideas you and Don & Elton Owen ever came up with was in about 1975 or 1976, when Frank Bonema had two of the major sponsors, Tom Peterson and (I believe) Friendly Joe Cayhan from Friendly Chevrolet, up in the crow's nest, and the Royal Kangaroos came up and insulted them and pushed them around, and in response, Don Owen announced that the sponsors had placed a bounty on the Royal Kangaroos' heads. For several months thereafter, top names from around the country came in for a Saturday night show to try to collect the bounty. Among the bounty-hunters were Lonnie Mayne, Mad Dog Vachon, Dory Funk Jr., Terry Funk. It went on for months, with the Kangaroos getting the hell kicked out of them in the first fall, winning the second, and then somehow pulling out a victory in the third fall, usually on a fluke (which, of course, kept the storyline running). It was a great idea! Another thing Dad was good at spotting was the good workers who made other wrestlers look good. He always said in that department, you were the best, with Jimmy Snuka a close second. He thought Bull Ramos was outstanding, too (which I didn't like, because I was a total mark and thought Bull was the devil incarnate, a tribute to his ability on the mic and in the ring). There was a time when you were busy with the Thanks for all the great memories of Portland Wrestling and the Wednesday nights at the Armory in Medford. My father is gone now, and among my most cherished memories of youth are the times we spent together watching you and Jimmy fight it out with the various heels while he explained to me the finer points of the business -- even though I was a complete mark. *laugh* I think the funniest remark I ever heard you utter on the mic on a Saturday night was when you became angry at an end-of-match run-in that cost you a match. It was after Jesse Ventura had had a falling out with Bull Ramos and was teaming with Buddy Rose, whose mid-section was just starting to expand. Ventura supposedly had his hair cut in a hair match, and had taken to wearing a mask. At the end of the match, you went up to Bonema's crows nest, threw down the coal-miner's glove, and said, "I'm going to get that bald idiot (Ventura) and that fat *** (Rose), and run them clear out of Oregon!" Of course, I marked out and the fans cheered like nuts. Great mic work. A final note: I've been waiting for about a year now for another fan to correct a piece of misinformation posted somewhere else here. Someone wrote and asked for the name of Lord Jonathan Boyd's partner in the Royal Kangaroos, and you responded that his name was "Lord Nelson Charles." I don't mean to contradict an old man, Dutch (as Frank Bonema would say, "Katy, bar the door!"), especially one I admire so much, but the partner's name was actually "Norman Frederick Charles III." If you look carefully at the "Northwest Legends" section of the Photo Album here on the site, there's a picture of the Kangaroos in which Boyd's partner even signed the picture that way. Again, Dutch, thanks for the memories. Yours in wrestling and in Christ,
"Hello Paul from Cedar City, Utah,,,, my, my what a nice letter. What a politician you are. You are right I stand corrected as an "old man" about Norman Fredrick Charles the third. My mind isn't what it used to be,,,, however if you'll drop by the farm up here ,you and I will go out back, and "discuss that "OLD MAN" remark,,,, Guarantee you ,you will not like the way I "discuss" wise crackers,,,, even at 70 years of age. With that said,,, Very nice letter. :) Your dad wasn't a jobber, that title only goes to men or women who really couldn't "work". Your Dad was a first class worker otherwise he wouldn't have been booked on the various big cards to make we main eventers look so good,,, nes-pa'. I owe my whole career to the great workers I had came in contact with over the years,, and your day was no exception. The bounty was my idea and Don took the credit of course, just as he always did. Jimmy Snuka learned as my partner great timing and working ability. 90% of his moves were mine, we were partners for over 6 years. Bull Ramos was the best and the greatest pure heel that ever graced a ring as far as this "OLD MAN" is concerned, boy I can't wait to meet you), (in a dark alley that is). Rameriz was a jobber, your correct in that assumption. Never did get over here or anywhere as far as I know,,, maybe L.A. That's another thing ,,I can't see Blassie beating up anyone , he couldn't lick my 3 years old grand daughter in a "shoot". Freddie was a complete worker, not a shooter. Very glad you mentioned the Lord in your closing,,, that makes all my threats "null and void",, in this reply. "Oh God, create in me a clean heart, and renew a right Spirit within me",,, is my undying prayer every day. Again thanks for the note and blessings,,, Paul (your named after Saul of Tarsus).... Granpa "old man" Dutch"
Question: Hello Dutch: I was just looking through the Bull Ramos photo album and I saw a picture of Bull with Jimmy Snuka, labeled "With tag-team partner Jimmy Snuka." I don't recall Ramos ever turning face, or Snuka ever turning heel, or any sort of temporary alliance between the two. What's the story behind the picture? Thanks. Marc C. in Portland, OR.
"Hello Marc C from Portland, Thanks for the note,,, yes,, Bull and Jimmy did team up for two matches,,, believe it or not so did Bull and myself for a very short run around the territory. Some thing else you probably don't remember: the PNW heavybelt being won byme, lost by me, won by me again and held up on a disputed call all in one week. So there,,, thanks again Dutch"
Question: JUST HAPPENED TO STUMBLE ON TO YOUR SITE....." WOW" WHAT FOND MEMORIES...I TOO GREW UP WATCHING PORTLAND WRESTLING IN THE 60'S AND EARLY 70'S..I EVEN REMEMBER GETTING A PEEK ONCE IN AWHILE AS A TODDLER IN THE LATE 50'S FROM THE OLD PORTLAND ARMORY ON TV...ALL THOSE GREATS THAT STARTED IN PORTLAND...TONY BORNE, LONNIE MAYNE, SNUKA, HAYSTACK, LUTHER LINDSEY, SHAG THOMAS OF COURSE DUTCH SAVAGE...ETC....ONE I GREW UP WITH A LOVE/HATE WAS BEAUREGARDE...WHO WAS HE AND WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM....ALSO HOW IS TONY BORNE DOING ?...I PLAN ON VISITING THIS SITE OFTEN....THANKS FOR ENTERTAINING ME ALL THOSE YEARS....GOD'S BLESSINGS ON YOU AND YOUR FANS .... Randy in Yuma, AZ.
"Hello Randy down thar in Yuma, AZ., the hottest place in the USA. Thanks for all the nice comments about the site,,,,yes we are very proud of our webservant Tough Tony Thomas for putting together such a great vehicle. Beauregarde, real name, Larry Pitchford, and he was currently living in Florida, last I heard. Has a sheet rock business. I have no idea how Tony Borne is , haven't seen nor heard from him in years. Again thanks for visiting the site,,, peace Dutch"
Question: Hi Dutch All long time wrestling fans have seen heels turn face and back again. How would the decision be made for a turn in a wrestler? Jeff in Lynnwood, WA.
"Hello Jeff from Lynwood, Washington, I have answered that question a couple of times on the site. During my day , there were no "decisions" made for a man to either be a "babyface" or a "heel",,, the promoters just watched the relationships between fans and the wrestlers. I was hated beyond belief when I came down to Portland out of the old Vancouver, B.C., Canada territory. Helped Beauregarde out one night against a couple of heels and the fans went crazy,,, I still had all "heel' moves from then out ,,,, you figure it out.... Thanks Jeff,,,, granpa Dutch"
Question: Just wanted to say I miss the old days of wrestling, Wed nights at the Medford Armory, watching wrestling every Saturday night on T.V. It was one of the few things that my whole family did together. We always made it a family event. I remember all the wrestlers were good to us fans The kangaroos, Bull Ramos, Lonnie Mane, Tough Tony Bourne, Buddy Rose and of course yourself. Wasn't there a wrestler by the name of Cowboy Frankie Lane ? Any good stories from Medford ? Also did you ever wrestle a guy name Rico Valentino( Rick Renaldo ). Thanks for the great site. and wonderful memories. Randy in Medford, OR.
"Hey Randy from Medford, Oregon, you're the first Medfordian that has written us. Good job, Randy, Yes I do remember Rico Valentino,,, alias,,, RICKY RENALDO. He is one of my best friend even today. He was one heck of a hard working had , he used to love to potato me and run out of the ring and hide behind Elton Owens. We had some great matches. Rick was mid- American Heavyweight Champion out of Tennessee and Alabama at one time,, great hand great friend and he still lives down your way some where,,,, I think.... Ricky is kind of a recluse, he can still bench press a building the little Sicilian. Frankie Laine , don't know where he is. No stories from Medford... Thanks Dutch"
Question: I've heard you say a lot of good things about Lonnie Mayne. I used to watch him wrestle all the time in the San Francisco territory when I was a little boy. He came across as crazy; what was he really like? Was he as wild in his personal life as he was on TV? Any out of the ring stories about him you can remember? Oh, and by the way, my friend I mentioned to you before who looks JUST like Lonnie Mayne says hi, he was very happy to hear you are doing well. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, Dutch! Patrick in Hayward, CA.
"Hello Patrick from Hayward CA., Yes , Lonnie was just about as crazy in real life as he was in the ring.... However he was "crazy" like a fox in the ring and "crazy" like a promoter in real life,,, he had all the angles covered, if you catch my meaning. At present I have given many stories on the site about most of the more interesting individuals I met during my career,,, just search the site and I think you may find one or two on my friend Lonnie,,, Thanks Dutch"
Question: Aloha Dutch, I saw a picture of you with other wrestlers in the ring in Japan. Can you please tell about the time you spent in Japan ? the fans ? the schedule ? Thank you. Dean in Hawaii
"Hello Dean from Hawaii,,, Most of the Japan trips I made were with super great workers and box office super stars, ,,, no bragging , just stating fact. The picture was a special tour made up of various USA regional , International, and World ex-champions who made their marks on the American Pro Wrestling scene. We were very busy , what with all the cities we had to visit in the short 3 weeks we were there,, during the particular tour picture you mentioned. Great accommodations, service and respect. Japan promoters ,,,all of them were real gentlemen and made sure we were well looked after. It was a real privilege for me to be part of the several tours I made over there. Great people the Nipponese, extremely hospitable, to all of us,,, so was Korea. The schedule,,,, one word grueling,,, the fans, next to the USA,,, the very best. I loved it over there, have made a ton of personal friends in Japan."
Question: What are your thoughts about Playboy Buddy Rose? He seemed like a pretty solid worker who could take bumps, and had good mic skills. I always thought his weight kept him from being a bigger star in other promotions. Brian in Eugene, OR.
"Hello again Brian from Eugene,,,,you're the first to ever ask me about Playboy Buddy Rose. Buddy was and always will be a superb worker, and could make the box office go, depending, who he was working with. He had a knack of always getting the people to hate him,,,,however,,, he didn't have the correct demeanor to be a baby face,,, people loved to hate him. I had some very classic matches with Buddy, he would do anything within his power to make a match sellable. Great hand and if we should ever get a Pacific Northwest Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame like New York has , Buddy should be one of the first of many who should be in it. Weight has nothing to do with it ,remember Haystack Calhoun, Dr. Jerry Graham, Luke Brown etc.... Why don't you get one (PNW Hall of Fame) started Brian,,,,you could if the drive was there... peace Dutch"
Question: I was reading an article on Steve Blackman recently and found out that he started his wrestling career in Calgary on Stampede Wrestling in the late eighties. He had a martial arts background and was in the WWE in the late nineties. I think he was injured in an accident and has retired from the ring. Dutch, do you know if Steve was in weight lighting or bodybuilding at one time or minor baseball? Fine athlete. Quick and agile John in Bowmanville, Ontario
"Hello John from Bowmansville, Ontario, Canada.. Steve Blackman,,,, I'm really sorry John, but I have never heard of the guy. In the late 80's and until now I have been retired from the business and could care less who is in it today. The business is nothing but show business these days and I don't care for it at all. None of these new people have had to "pay the price" any of us had to,,, breaking in in the 40'50'60's and thru the 70's. We didn't have wrestling schools and tumbling teachers,,,we had to "earn" our way in the hard way. But,, time goes on and I don't pay much attention as to what is happening to the business today,,,,sorry,,,, thanks Dutch"
Question: Hey Dutch: Do you know anything about Hans Mortier, who wrestled in the 60's and early 70's? I heard he had a stroke. Chris in CA.
"Hello Chris from California, Sorry to disappoint you , but no I don't know anything about Hans Morteir, except he came out here one time into the old Vancouver territory and couldn't cut the mustard, he was sort of big back east in New York and a couple of other places, but not out here, and as I understand it, he didn't get over too well in L.A,. either. That was the trouble with some of those guys from the east,,, big names back there but when it came to a smaller territory where you had to really know how to work to bring crowds in on your own,,, some of them just couldn't cut it......I haven't heard about a stroke ,,,,, Dutch"
Question: I don't see much of the science of tag team wrestling anymore (keeping the opponent in your corner, distracting the referee, doubleteaming). I sure miss the great tag teams in PNW history (Savage-Snuka, the Von Steigers, the Kangaroos, etc.). Dutch, what are your thoughts? Why have we moved away from that entertaining brand of wrestling? What's the best tag team you ever saw? Brian in Eugene, OR.
"Hello Brian from Eugene, Or., Good Question, My thinking on the subject are savvy the minds of the young men in regards to ring savvy. They have none. Everything is into the ropes, one tackle get it again, high spot, high spot, punch, stomp, kick, do it again,,, and them there is that ridiculous "cloths line, and that little masked runt , running around beating guys three times his size. They are complete show business and the fans are dumb enough to believe that non-sense. I have watched on a couple of occasions for a very short period,,, during our day 99% of those guys couldn't cut the mustard in the old territories. Tag Teams,,,,,, there are no such things in the WWE,,, they stink. We have moved away from the old brand of wrestling because they have programmed and entire generation to believe in immorality and to worship violence. I hope you're not part of that crowd. The best all around tag team I ever worked with was Harley Race and Larry Henning, The Von Steigers and I think Savage and Snuka were in there somewhere... Thanks Brian Dutch"
Question: Dutch, You mentioned before that wrestlers used to car pool together to the matches. Was there any one particular wrestler who was such a crazy driver that no one wanted to car pool with him? And who drove the nicest car, and whose car was in danger of falling apart at any moment? Thanks, Dutch! And have a great day! Patrick in Hayward, CA
"Hey Patrick from Hayward, CA., boy some of you guys ask some unique questions,,, yes,, some of the wrestlers car pooled, some heels with heels , some baby faces with baby faces,,, but never the two mixed. If I caught a heel riding with a baby , he would get his notice,, post haste,,, and have to leave the territory, "Kayfabein". Craziest driver I ever rode with was 100 mile an hour Harley Race. Harley had more speeding tickets in the mid-west than the municipal courts could handle. Most guys wouldn't ride with him, but I would. I liked the idea of getting home 2 hours earlier that the other wrestlers, from our matches. Of course I was sheet white when I arrived and my eyes were out of their sockets, but I got over that. Race always drove a brand new car, Buick, Olds, Caddy, he had to they were always impounding his car for un-paid speeding tickets. John Tolos always had a nice big new car and oh yes,,, a fellow I remember, I think his name was Savage. Regards Dutch"
Question: Hi Dutch, A question was asked about The Brute who I recall wrestled here in B.C during the early to mid 70s. I beleve his real name is Michael Davis, and he wrestled in Florida and the southern states as Busy Mcgraw. Two quick questions how would you rate the Tolos brothers in the ring? And did you have a agreement with Stu Hart from the Calgary territory in the exchange of wrestlers? Thanks for insightful thoughts. Harry Bisjak in Victoria
"Thanks Harry Bisjak from Victoria ,B.C. Canada for the nice note about Mike Davis. You were right ,,,now,,, I remember!!! The Tolos brothers, let me see, without offending anyone. John was the catalyst of the team, Cris was a pure meat chopper and on his own, just couldn't cut the mustard. John on the other hand was a meat chopper also, but he had charisma,,, chutzpah, if you will,,, he would draw you money depending on who he was working with at the time. You asked me a question and I answered it as truthful as I could. John was and still is, I hope, a great friend of mine. He is one of the legends. As far as an agreement with Stu Hart, no ,we had signed agreement about trading talent,,, we traded talent with most all other territories of that day,,, at least the ones who wanted to do business. Some of the talent Hart had at that time wouldn't make it in the old Portland/Seattle territory,,, some of them didn't have the "right stuff" the N.W. fans demanded. Have a great week Dutch"
Question: Hi Dutch, I first want to say that your comment about so many wrestlers claiming to be Christian but not acting the part absolutely hits the nail on the head. Well put. Secondly, I was wondering how Jackie Fargo was an influence on you or if you ever got to work with him. Thank you. Dan Childers in Lexington, KY.
"Hi Dan Childers from Lexington, Ky., Thanks for the note and I was glad to hear that you agree with my assertion that,, not just wrestlers,, but many pro-athletics, claim they are "Christians" and go out and beat each others brains in on the 7th Day Sabbath of God or on the Popes Day... Sunday the first day of the week. Doesn't make Biblical sense to say,," I am a "Christian" and then go and do physical harm to another person. But,, Dan ,,, that is just what the Scriptures say ,,,what do I know , "never having learned my letters". Yes ,,I did work with Jackie Fargo and his brother and Mario Milano, and Gene Dundee, Lester Welsch, Len Rossi, Mario Galento, Chief little Eagle and a host of others when I was in the Tennessee territory in the very early 60's. I worked under the hood as Mr. X. Perhaps the most influential on my behalf in that territory were Mike Padusious and Steve Kovacs. They taught me the most during that era. Thanks Dutch.... remember Dan, He said,,,,"if I be lifted up I will call all men unto me",,,," ALL are called,,,F E W are chosen"."
Question: Dutch, In my mind the best feud I ever saw in Portland was you and Bull Ramos. Did the two of you ever think of taking it to other parts of the country what you two had in the ring I think you could have sold out anywhere. Jeff in Lynwood, WA.
"Hello Jeff from Lynnwood, Wa., Yes , I had thought of asking other promoters to use the Ramos-Savage feud in British Columbia and San Francisco,,, but my partners, Don and Elton Owen, wouldn't let us go. We were too important to their bank books as well as ours. The matches would have gotten over anywhere in the country. If you ever have the opportunity to run a territory and only have 12-15 men to book it you'll know what I mean. Greed does funny things to people, because THE LOVE of money is the root of ALL evil. Thanks for the note and keep in touch Jeff,,, peace Dutch"
Question: Who was "The Brute" Vancover All Star Wrestling in the early 70s. Romans 5:8 Alex in London, ON.
"Hello Alex from London Ontario, Canada,,, You know I worked with the guy many times, and he was greener than a wicker chair when he came in here, I can still see his face and for the life of me I can't remember his given name,,, maybe someone out there can tell us what his real name was and where he was from. I see you like to quote single Scriptures,,, but do you read the rest of the story??? Try Romans chapter ,,,ALL of it,,, especially verse; 23,,, and what about,, "he that turneth his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer is an abomination",,, I'll let you look that one up peace Dutch"
Question: My question is what happened to Billy Jack Haynes, the powerhouse wrestler from Portland who went on to the World Wrestling Federation, left and came back to Portland. He started his own wrestling promotion, opened a gym etc. He was a good scientific wrestler in the eighties, master of the full nelson, always kept himself in shape, a former weightlifter and a bodybuilder. The last I read, he did a promo for a sun tanning company a few years back. I'm a big fan. I think those biceps could have been 22 inches and probably weights about 260 lbs. What is he doing these days John in Bowmanville, Ontario Canada
"Hello John,,, I hate to bust your bubble about Billy Jack Haynes, but I won't comment on him at all. It would be considered guile no matter what,, or how I said it ,by,,,most folks anyway. I have no idea where he is today, and have no idea what he is doing , last I heard he was working for a car parts store. Sorry I can't help you,,, it was my idea to get him started in the business. Don didn't want him because of certain ramifications and I had to convince Don to send him up to Calgary to break him in. If he made it up there he could make it anywhere. Never hear from him any more. Sorry I can't help. You're a loyal fan of his,,, that's great !!! Yes his biceps were bigger than my waist,,,HA,,,, Dutch"
Question: Hi Dutch, I grew up watching you in the 70's and 80's and would like to know if you have any contacts for other wrestlers that were in Portland at that time would like to get signed photos to put in collection, even though I do not keep up with the pro circuit any more, you were one of my favorite stars in Portland, even though I have turned my life to the Lord would still like to have some of the old photos of other wrestlers that were in Portland in that time period. You can send to my email addy. Thanks Dutch and God bless you. Michael Berge in Salem, OR.
"No Michael Berge from Salem, Or., I don't have any contact with any of the old wrestlers, except my long time friend Sandy "The Teen Age Idol" Barr. We talk about twice. I don't have any signed photos maybe if you contacted him at his flea market in Portland, (it's in the book), he could help you. Glad you have accepted the Lord, hope you are walking in the right path and not the path of the world... thanks Dutch"
Question: Hi, Dutch, and thanks SO much for a great site. My fondest memories of pro wrestling all center on Portland Wrestling, on KPTV and at the Lane County Fairgrounds on Friday nights! All the greatest wrestlers I've ever seen or heard of (with "The Dutchman" in the top 1 percent!) were all in the PNW at one time or another. Of course, that's what MADE them the greatest. Thanks for keeping such wonderful memories alive, and from a fellow Christian, may God bless you. Bradee Beard formerly from Eugene, OR.
"Hi Bradee Beard formely of Eugene Or., We thank you for the very nice accolades and other comments, but all the credit goes to the Lord who gave us the ability to do the things we did during those years, Unfortunately WE took the credit to ourselves ,,because we hadn't learned to die to self during those years, at least I hadn't. But,, by His grace, and The Holy Spirit I saw His marvelous light,, just before I retired and I still serve him today,,,,again, thanks and keep in touch,,,, peace, Grandpa Dutch"
Question: Are there videos or DVDs available from any time that Portland Wrestling has been around? baldcrank in Scappoose, OR.
"Hello Baldcrank from Scappose, Or., Yes I think there are several. I know of one we were selling on "dutchsavage.com" a couple of years ago. I have the copyright on it and I understand several people had made copies of it and are selling it today. I hope I can find out who they are,,,,boy ,,,will my attorney like to get their names and addresses. Other than the tape, "Savage" I know of no others , maybe some one out there knows of some... Thanks Dutch"
Question: I was thinking about wrestlers from the Portland Sports Arena days the other day. Two guys that came to mind were Ricky Hunter and Les Thornton. Both seemed like pretty good athletes and solid pros. Any thoughts about these two gentlemen? Brian in Eugene, OR.
"Sure Brian, from Eugene, Or., I have only good thoughts about Ricky Hunter, one great worker and a pretty good mike man. He had a long and fruitful career. I worked with Rick many, many times and yet to have a bad match with him. Plus he is a good friend of mine. He would do anything and everything to make all of his matches classics. He recently had a quad by-pass and still has heart troubles. Les Thorton on the other hand was a jobber and I only worked with him once or twice in the old Vancouver B.C. territory, so I really can't critique him. Hope you're having a good month regards Dutch"
Question: When I was in the Army at Ft. Lewis I remember seeing your son Mark(?) in one of his first matches. Has he gone on in wrestling under another name, or is he doing something else now? Douglas in Seattle, WA.
"Hello Douglas from Seattle,,,So you were a G.I., good man. My son Mark came to me and wanted to "break" into the business... There weren't any school then, just a try out with the local territorial promotion. I didn't want to see him get into the business after what I had endured for over 30 years at that time,,, but he insisted, so I sent him back to Bob Giegle in the old Kansas City territory. He called me about a month later and said ,,,"Dad, do you remember all the hundreds of things you told me to watch out for in the business", and I said yes,,, he then said,," they all happened to me this past month and I have had enough I should have listened to you but I didn't,,, I'm coming home". Shortly after that he quit the business and is now a very successful businessman in grocery store wholesaling. Have a nice week and write again and tell your friends about the great job Tony our Webservant is doing having rebuilt the site and it's back up in a better operation,,,thanks Dutch"
Question: Hi Dutch, you are a name from the past. I go back to the Gust Karras time. Do you remember "The Time Keeper", AKA Mike George? He was in the Central States area about the same time that you were. Thanks in advance. Jim Murray in Kansas City, MO.
"Hello Jim Murry, from KC, Mo., Glad you remember the Kansas City and St.Joe, Missouri days. If you remember Bob Giegle and I were the Central States-Mid-American tag champs during that era and Bob had the single belt , which I got later on. I knew a wrestler by the name of Mike George, and Mike was a good hand,,, is that who you're talking about???, I do not remember The Time Keeper,,,,way toooooo many years ago for this old fossil to have in my memory. Thank you for the note and I'm glad you remember that era,,,, Dutch"
Question: What ever happened in that confrontation between you and Baron Von Krupp? Mike Ferrrara in Portland, OR.
"Hey Mike Ferrara from Portland. Good question,,, well we had a little feud going andb we were drawing some real good crowds. He asked Don Owen, as I remember, for a little more money than we were giving him and Don wouldn't pay him, which I agreed with. Plus, I think he had words with Elton also,,, and he just took off and left,,, for where I never asked,,,Thanks. Dutch"
Question: Hey Dutch: Talked to Brother Chris this morning and he shared with me your website........WOW.........we grew up in Daly City the home of Joe's of Westlake Restaurant and the best Veal Parmigania in town. The Cow Palace was the place to hang in the 60's-70's for Big Time Wrestling, and I enjoyed your legacy then whipping it up with Patterson, Johnson, Moondog, Mavia, Stevens etc Tell me, is Pat Patterson, Ray Stevens, Pepper Martin still around? How are you doing? I'm so happy to learn that your life is paralleling Jesus. God Bless/Peace, LC Larry Chiarella in Sacramento, CA
"Hello Larry Chiarella from Sacramento, CA... How's it, pizzan? Good to hear from you. The web site , you can give credit to our web servant and fellow Christian, Tony Thomas of Monroe ,Washington,,,,all I do is answer inquiries, Tony is da boss. In answer to your question about some of the stars,,, Stevens is gone, Mavia is gone, Lonnie Moondog Mayne is gone,, and they sleep in their graves awaiting the second coming of our Lord,,, which should be very soon,,, if you're watching the "signs of the times". I think Pepper Martin is still with us as well as my friend and fellow Christian Rocky Johnson. If you are watching the signs "look up for your redemption draweth nigh". As far as my life is concerned, every day is a blessing. I enjoy teaching Scripture and we have a TV show up here that does that very thing. It's on public cable access TV. Would you like to sponsor it on cable access down there?? It's free and very simple to do,,,, Have great week Larry and send me some descent sauce,,, these people haven't any idea what good homemade Italian sauce is... Peace Dutch"
Question: Dutch, What do you do for fun these days? Do you stay in contact with Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, Rip Oliver, Buddy Rose or Billy Jack Haynes? Last but not least....Do you have a favorite Bible scripture verse? Mine is Philippians 4:4-7 Geary in Salem, OR.
"Well let's see Geary,,, I do a lot of fishing and I teach Scripture, which is my first love, Scripture ,that is,,, next to the Lord Himself....No, I don't have any contact with any of the people you spoke of,,, it seems they have forgotten who gave them their first big boost. But, that's OK, the Lord knows my heart and He is my judge and that's all that count in this life, on this stinking rock called Earth. Everyone ,,it seems today,, quotes mostly New Testament Scripture and it seems, they love Paul's writings and some of the others. Me,, I love the Old Testament , because it was placed in the cannon of the Holy writ as "ensamples" for us upon whom the end of the world is come. So I choose,, for this note,,, Isaiah Chapter 58, if you have a KJV of the Writ, you will find it quite informative. These newer versions are junk. But what do I know" never having learned my letters. Peace, Dutch"
Question: Hey, I'm 45 and just wanted to say thanks for so many great childhood memories watching you with Lonnie Mayne, Beauregarde and all the others around in the late sixties and early seventies. I was looking through your pics on the website and these brought back a lot of memories. Before all the WCW, WWF, WWE there was Portland Wrestling for me. VonSteigers, Kangaroos, Ramos, The claw, these were my wrestling idols but you were my favorite. Thanks Dutch! Jim in Clackamas, OR.
"Thank you Jim from Clackamas, Or., for your nice note , but,, all those other guys deserve any credit, I just sorta sat around and watched them wow the crowds,,, regards Dutch"
Question: Dutch, Portland Wrestling in the 1970's was the best! Your feuds with Bull Ramos were my favorites; Bull could really raise my ire with his verbal and physical onslaughts...What a legend! My prayers go out to him. Do you know if he is a Christian? In Christ, Geary in Salem, OR.
"Hello Geary fro Salem, Or., Yes,,, Bull claims Jesus as his Savior, I have no idea which denomination he attends ,,, if any. He loves the Lord and, we all that remember him, (Bull that is), should pray for his continued health,,, Peace and thank you for the note,,,, Dutch"
Question: I remember watching you wrestle in the all star wrestling promotion in B.C. What was it like when you wrestled in one of the coal miner's glove matches? Alan O'Melia in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada
"Hello Alan O'Melia, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada,,,, good to here from you, The west Virginia Coal Miners Glove match was a brutal bloody affair. If you were not in shape you shouldn't have attempted to compete in one of those matches during my era. After I invented the match as my specialty bout,,, I sat down a scolded myself many times. The bouts were always risky in the way they were held and any man that was involved in one with me, knows exactly what I mean. The original pole they put the glove on,, in the original first 15 of those matches was 12" above the ring mat, One had to climb the pole and retrieve it , it had a small slab of steel taped across it's knuckles and if you got to it first you could then,,, use it on your opponent, Usually one punch with the glove on and that ended the bout. Of course you'd have a head ache for quite some time afterward, if it hit you. Thanks Alan Peace "A" Dutch"
Question: I can't believe I found this website! I first saw you wrestle when I would visit my grandparents in Ontario during the mid 70's. They would have Wrestling from Vancouver on TV on Saturday nights. I really miss those days. I wonder if you could tell me about a wrestler by the name of Guy Mitchell. I believe he also worked under a mask as Mister X for awhile. How was he to work with, and what was he like out of the ring? I really enjoyed watching you wrestle along with Kiniski, Jonathan, and many others. I lived in Montreal and I saw you wrestle at the old Verdun Auditorium once against Iron Mike Sharpe. It was the only time I watched you wrestle live and I was really excited because I had seen you wrestle so many times on the TV shows out of Vancouver. Thanks Dutch. Mark Christie in Tampa, FL.
"Hello there,,,,in Tampa, Florida,,,,, Mark Christie,,,, boy oh boy!!!!! Ontario sounds like such a long time ago, come to think of it ,it was!!!!. Nice letter and good to hear from such a long time fan. That era was when our TV went nationwide across Canada. Ron Moureia' was the announcer. Guy Mitchell was a very nice guy, But someone mentioned he had passed on recently. I hope I am wrong in this, Yes,, he did work under the hood for a while. He was a real good worker, and real gentleman outside the ring to boot. I liked Guy. We had some good matches together. My stars! The Old Verdun Auditorium,,, my that was another life time ago,,,,"a". I used to potato the heck out of Mike Sharpe, only trouble was , he was so stiff,,, he never felt them, the big ox. Very nice guy though. Well young man thanks for the note and have a great life,,,, Granpa Dutch" Douglas from Seattle writes: "Guy Mitchell had a long run in the Detroit area as "The Stomper" in singles and tags with Ben Justice. He was also the wrestler who worked as "Jerry Valiant" in their last run at WWWF as tag champions. I've recently heard mention of a reunion show which was supposed to reunite Jimmy, John and Jerry Valiant, so Guy may still be with us."
Question: Hi Dutch! Great site. You sure stay on top of things. I just wanted to let you know that I've seen a few questions on here where people ask you about Jimmy Snuka, and you mentioned you haven't heard from him but would like to. Well, I know this isn't much but I was just at a site called obsessedwithwrestling.com and it said under Buddy Rose's profile that on January 29, 2005 there was a match called "Wrestle Reunion" in which Roddy Piper, Jimmy Valiant and Jimmy Snuka beat Buddy Rose, Col. Debeers and Bob Orton w/Sherri. Just thought that might help; maybe one of those guys has his address? By the way, in my spare time I play in a rock band, and our guitarist, Randy, looks JUST like Lonnie Mayne!!! I printed out a picture you have of him from your site, and Randy was shocked at the similarity! Well, keep up the good work, and God bless! Pat Hartman in Hayward, CA.
"Thanks Pat from Haywood, Ca., Nice note. I don't have any idea when that match you speak of took place. I understand Jimmy is in Vegas , promoting with his son. (I'm the godfather to his daughter). Snuka has never written nor called me in years. He evidentially has forgotten about his old teacher,,, but that's OK. I have trained, through working in the ring, night after night, year after year,,, many who couldn't even talk on the mike, nor find their way to the ring,,,,when they came into our territory,, and to this day I hear from none of them. The list of guys is infinitesimal. I have given up on Jimmy, however, I do thank you for your nice letter, and tell your buddy who looks like Lonnie,,, " there's excitement in the air!" Regards Dutch"
Question: I grew up watching All-Star wrestling on CKCO TV from Kitchener 10.pm. Saturday Nights in the early 70s. Eric Froleich was obviously a superior athlete but always jobbed his matches. We always wondered why he was never a main-eventer. Alex in London,Ontario
"Hey Alex ,,, are you having a ggod week,,,A. Yes Eric Groelich was a magnificant athlete. Only fellow during my tenure that I ever saw rub the ring ropes,,,all the way around....stop and dropkick you from the top rope. Eric was in man, many main events as a tag team partner of many of the greats of his era. The main reason Eric never made it as a single was,,,,he couldn't talk convincingly on the mike. His mike work wasn't the best and almost all the promoters caught it. I had hundreds of matches with Eric,, he was a real pro's pro,,, he would do anything he could to make the match a success. As far as I am concerned, Eric should be in the hall of fame,,,concidering how many people,, during his career,,, he made look like stars,,,including yours truly... Thanks Dutch"
Question: I read your reply to a question about Handsome Johnny Barend. You heard that he had passed. I'm happy to let you know that he is alive and well in Avon NY Steve in Rochester NY
"Well thank you, Steve, that is great news. I'm very glad Johnny is still with us. He was one of the hottest properties that Ed Francis ever had in Hawaii. John was one of the first to ever invent a group of wrestlers called a "Rat Pack". Some of the things he did on TV were just outrageous and years ahead of their time. Many have tried to imitate Barrend's style of charisma, but have failed miserably over the years. Anyone who ever worked with Johnny knows what a class act he was and still is. Avon, New York is a better place because Johnny is living there. I wish him good health and the best wishes I can send. Does he have a web site or address???? Again thanks, Steve,,,, Dutch"
Question: I just viewed a tape of "Championship Wrestling USA" from the mid to late 1990s and you were the announcer. Can you give us the "rest of the story"? Rob in Portland, Oregon
"Well, Rob in north Portland...Sandy Barr was the author of trying to get Portland Wrestling going in the late 90s. He asked me to do the announcing and color for the show and I did. I helped him get his TV show on cable access over here in Vancouver, Washington. We cut the show with his portable truck at the Bagley Center. He was doing fairly well until he had a severe run in with a certain "wrestler" (who shall remain nameless) messed up his show for him and became a primadona. So rather than put up with the nonsense that person was causing, Sandy opted on the integrity he has always had and cancelled doing the shows. Maybe he'll start them up again. If so, getting good talent will be his problem. It seems today anyone who thinks he can take a bump or lifts weights can become the next wrestling superstar. Take it from an old man, "ain't no way you can make a purse out of a sow's ear". Super talent comes along once in a lifetime and they are hard to spot. They don't need the big bumps nor the fantastic body; they are just BELIEVABLE and the public immediately spots them. Most of today's promoters can't tell the gold from the dross, they have no eyesight. That's why the business is so immoral today -- anything to draw a house and kill off good talent. Dutch"
Question: I have a wrestling window card advertising a match during the early 1970s. Can you tell us anything about what the Southern California scene was like back then? RC in Portland, Oregon
"Hello RC from Portland. Nice note and yes the southern California wrestling was fairly hot during the early 70s. Mike LaBell and Jules Strongbow had it going fairly well, only with Ileane Eaton's best wishes. Blassie, Tolos, Mascaras and a few others were very strong at the box office. I went down there when they wanted someone to work with Tolos or Blassie who they knew could draw a crowd and make their headliners look good. LaBell never beat me, always a DQ or a count out on the floor -- but I made the headliners always look good and I was not an easy job to finish off. That's why I was asked to come down there so much. Answer your question??? Hope so. Dutch "
Question: I was wondering if you remembered a wrestler named Baron Von Krupp? Bob in Wisconsin
"Hello Bob from Wisconsin. Yes, I remember the infamous Baron Von Krupp. And yes, he wore a monocle and he did wrestle in the Salem arena. I do not, however, have any idea of happened to him to this day. He left us one day and I never have heard of him again. He was a really good hand, however. Regards, Dutch"
Question: I'm hoping you can jog my memory a bit concerning a late-night local TV show I saw with you and Tough Tony Borne as guests. I can't recall the station or the moderator, maybe it was KATU. Mark Covert in Portland, Oregon
"Hello Marc. Yes, I remember the show and I remember Borne and all his upstaging on that show. It was "AM Northwest" with Jim Boslie and Margie Boule. Paul Linnman came on at the end and tried to make some funny stuff with Borne, which I didn't participate in. Linnmann was afraid of me for some reason and steered clear of me and did his thing with Borne -- made them both look like fools. I still have a copy of that tape. Incidentally, Bosley had me back on a year later for the entire show. Remember that??? Regards, Dutch"
Question: I was watching a tape the other night of Portland Wrestling from the 1980s and you told a story about a coach in Salem who kept telling people that he could take on any of the wrestlers and beat them because it was "fake." He was taken up on his offer, and you said he was stretched pretty good...by Dandy Sandy Barr himself! Any details? Cato in Eugene, Oregon
"Well let's see Cato, I think the story went something like this: Coach from Oregon State got on a radio station and said any one of his men could beat any Portland pro wrestler, and he really knocked the business. Tony Borne heard about it and got on TV and challenged the coach to a shoot right then and there. The coach was mortified and backed down because he said he was not in good enough condition to take Tony on. (Tony was pushing 50 then...can you imagine?) Well, we never heard of the coach again, so the legend goes. That's how it was passed down to the rest of us. I'm sure it has been really blown out of proportion since those days. Dutch."
Question: Hi Dutch! Awesome website! I can't get enough. I am interested in the in-ring communication between wrestlers. Were there code words for the different moves? What were some of them? Was one of the wrestlers the "lead?" LC in Portland, Oregon
"Hello LC from Portland. Sure, there were different code words for different moves during my day. Like, "oh that hurt" and "my stars I'm seeing them" and "man I didn't know the ring post was made of steel" and the ever popular "geez it's a long way down from over the top rope to the floor", and the old standard "I think I broke something". Most of the top hands in the business were "ring generals"; you had better do what they told you or the match would literally stink. Thanks for the questions, Dutch."
